Tom Rodgers: photography |
 |
DESCRIPTION |
 |
| From ArtSpace: Photography receives sporadic attention from York art
galleries. We're looking forward to giving The ArtSpace over to Tom's
work in April, but in the meantime we thought a warm up show at Living
Room would be ideal. It's a great exhibition space, and attracts a
different clientle from that we're used to. This is an ideal collaboration for
both parties: Living Room garners a genuine York based artist and we
get priceless exposure. This is the kind of thing that maintains York
status as a crackling, unpredictable and generous place to live, and
kudos to Living Room for taking a risk on edgier artists - it's a gesture
that both we as curators and Tom as an artist are very grateful for.
We were first exposed - no pun intended - to Tom's photography when
he and his father approached with their work 2 years ago. We exhibited
both artists, and Tom continues to support ArtSpace by running classes.
He's a great guy, and has a very interesting take on life. You can't fake a
quirky love of life. Tom's work is at times subtle, at times unsettling, but
at its heart there's thise wide eyed sense of wonder. As an artist in these
tediously cynical times, you can't start off with a greater gift than that.
Tom Rodgers
I am an artist, mainly working with traditional photographic processes.
The enjoyment I get from the physicality of film and paper, the tactile
nature of darkroom procedures, make it the perfect medium to share the
enjoyment I get from looking at the world through a camera. I have been
working with photography for over 10 years now and after graduating
with a first in photography from the University of Derby and studying for a
year in America at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, I now
feel that I am making the strongest work I ever have. I also continue to
look back through my old work to produce new arrangements and to
push my work in new directions. At the moment I am working to get more
exhibition experience, something which Greg McGee of the Artspace has
been incredibly supportive of. Hopefully we can work together on bigger
and better things in the future. Whilst I shall continue my career as Tutor
of A-Level photography at York College, the next major step I intend to
make in my artistic development is to study for a Masters in fine art,
concentrating on photography. |
